Dog Trainer In Cheviot Hills, Los Angeles, CA

Iconic Dog Training brings a professional trainer to your home in Cheviot Hills for private, one-on-one sessions with you and your dog. We train both you and your dog at the same time, because a trained dog with an untrained owner doesn’t stay trained.

Why Cheviot Hills Dog Owners Choose In-Home Training

Most trainers who list “Cheviot Hills” as a service area run their sessions out of a facility in West Hollywood or Santa Monica. You drive 30 minutes, train in an unfamiliar room, drive home, and your dog goes right back to pulling on the leash outside your front door.

That disconnect is the reason board-and-train programs have a regression problem. Your dog learns to listen to a different person in a different place. Back in your house, on your block, with your habits, the training doesn’t transfer.

Cheviot Hills is a neighborhood of single-family homes with yards, tree-lined sidewalks, and quiet residential streets like Monte Mar and Patricia. Those are the environments where your dog’s actual behavior problems show up. Your dog doesn’t lunge at other dogs inside a training center. They lunge when you’re walking past the houses on Sawyer Street and a terrier appears from behind a hedge. Training where the problems happen is how the fixes stick.

We also run sessions at Cheviot Hills Park and Rancho Park once your dog is ready for more distractions. For service dogs, later sessions include airports and high-traffic commercial areas.

The Home-First Training Sequence

Every Iconic program follows a three-phase progression that moves your dog from controlled environments to real-world distractions. We call it the Home-First Training Sequence, and it’s built on a simple principle: master the easy environment before adding difficulty.

Your Home and Yard

Foundation commands (sit, down, place, come, stay), impulse control, and the rules of your household. You give the commands from day one, not just the trainer.

Your Neighborhood

Leash manners, recall around distractions, calm behavior on walks. We train on your actual sidewalks and parks. Your dog practices ignoring other dogs, joggers, cyclists, and traffic noise in real time.

High-Distraction Environments

Outdoor dining areas, busy commercial corridors, crowded parks. For service dogs, this includes airports and public transit. The goal: your dog performs reliably in the hardest conditions, not just the easy ones.

This is different from taking your untrained dog to a park class on day one and hoping they focus while 11 other dogs bark around them. It’s also different from facility-based training where the dog never practices in the environments that actually matter to you.

The Two-Skill Split: You Learn While Your Dog Learns

Most training programs focus on the dog. Iconic splits every session between two learners.

Your dog learns: commands, impulse control, leash manners, how to settle on command, and how to respond to you (not just the trainer) in distracting environments.

You learn: timing, body language, when to reinforce, how to read what your dog is communicating, and how to maintain structure between sessions.

Both happen simultaneously, in the same session. This is the core reason in-home training produces longer-lasting results than board-and-train. When someone else trains your dog for two weeks and hands them back, you haven’t built the communication patterns that keep the behavior consistent. With the Two-Skill Split, you’re building those patterns from session one.

The treat trap (and why it matters)

One thing we correct constantly: holding a treat in front of a dog’s nose and asking for a command. That teaches the dog to perform for food. It works for tricks. It doesn’t work for obedience. If your dog only sits when they see a treat in your hand, they haven’t learned to sit. They’ve learned to trade.

Iconic uses a balanced training method. That means positive reinforcement combined with appropriate pressure based on what each individual dog needs. The result is a dog that responds to you, not to whatever’s in your pocket.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you actually come to Cheviot Hills, or do I drive to you?

Every session happens at your home, in your yard, or on your neighborhood streets and parks. No facility, no commute. We cover all of LA County with no travel fees.

Can you train a reactive or aggressive dog?

Yes. Behavior modification for reactivity and aggression is a core program. Private in-home sessions are better for these cases than group classes because we can control the environment, manage triggers gradually, and work at your dog’s pace without the added stress of unfamiliar dogs nearby.

What training method do you use?

Balanced training: positive reinforcement combined with appropriate pressure matched to each dog’s temperament. We don’t rely on treats alone (that trains a dog to trade, not to listen), and we don’t rely on corrections alone. The method adapts to the individual dog.

Do you offer service dog training and certification?

Yes. Iconic provides full service dog training including task training, public access work, and ID card issuance. Airlines and organizations verify certification directly through Iconic. Service dog programs include sessions at airports and high-traffic public spaces, not just your home.

Small changes. Big difference.
